A century-old home restored with old-world European elegance.
New work had to sit alongside the original fabric of the house so naturally that it’s hard to tell where the old ends and the new begins.
The formal rooms set the tone. Original ceiling mouldings were preserved beneath a deep green painted ceiling, and scenic tapestry-style wall coverings wrap the room. Underfoot, a geometric parquetry floor combines timber and stone, framed by a classic stone fireplace surround.
Throughout the house, the detailing is carefully considered. The powder room is fully panelled in soft sage, with a dentil cornice, brass tapware and a patterned marble floor. The laundry features arched cabinetry with brass mesh inserts, reeded joinery, a fluted fireclay sink, marble benchtops and handmade-style green tiles beneath a brass hanging rail.
In the bathrooms, marble washstands with shaped upstands sit against handmade-style tiles, paired with wall-mounted brass tapware and reeded vanity joinery. In the main bedroom, new built-in wardrobes with reeded panels and brass hardware sit comfortably beside the original marble fireplace and timber floorboards.
Restoring a home of this age takes patience and care. Every panel, moulding and joint had to be set out precisely to match the character of the original house, and much of the joinery was made to suit spaces that were never built square.
